CAG Flags Over Rs 1,200 Crore Bengal Transport Losses

CAG Flags Over Rs 1,200 Crore Bengal Transport Losses

India’s government auditor examined West Bengal’s Transport Department from 2019 to March 2024.

The audit said the department did not collect more than Rs 1,200 crore that it was supposed to receive.

Most of the missing money came from unpaid road taxes and penalties.

The report said many vehicle owners were listed as defaulters, but officials did not follow up.

It also found unpaid fitness fees, permit fees and other charges.

Problems with the e-Vahan computer system made some records harder to use correctly.

The department said it had too few workers to enforce the rules properly.

Transport Minister Arjun Singh also said money had leaked during the previous administration and promised stronger action.
