India Ends Immigration Boarding Pass Stamping September 1
India is changing how people leave the country on international flights.
Starting September 1, immigration officers will stop stamping boarding passes.
Travelers can show a boarding pass on their phone.
People who prefer paper can still use a printed boarding pass.
The paper pass will be accepted but will not receive a stamp.
Officials said the old stamping process sometimes caused inconvenience.
They also said bad or smudged stamps could cover important information and cause reading problems.
India is separately testing whether passport stamps can eventually be replaced with electronic records.
Boarding pass stamping at immigration counters will end at all Indian international airports from September 1.
Passengers may show e-boarding passes on smartphones for international-departure immigration clearance.
Printed boarding passes will remain accepted, but immigration officers will not stamp them.
The Bureau of Immigration cited passenger inconvenience and errors caused by improper or incorrect stamping.
A separate pilot project could eventually remove entry and exit passport stamps for Indian passport holders.
