OPEC+ Halts Planned 2026 Oil Output Hikes Amid Glut Fears
Imagine a big club of oil-producing countries called OPEC+.
They decided to pump a little bit more oil starting in December.
But, they are also going to stop the plans they had for pumping even more oil in the first few months of next year.
This is because they are worried there's already too much oil out there, which can make prices go down.
Also, new rules from countries like the US and UK are making it harder for Russia, a member of their club, to sell its oil.
So, OPEC+ is pausing to see what happens with those rules and to keep oil prices steady.
They met in Abu Dhabi, where a big oil conference was also happening.
Even though they are pausing some increases, they are still planning to make more oil in the future.
Meanwhile, the US is encouraging its own oil production.
OPEC+ announced it will halt further oil production increases planned for the first quarter of 2026.
A modest increase of 137,000 barrels per day for December 2025 was agreed upon.
The decision was driven by concerns over an existing oil supply glut and market oversupply.
New Western sanctions on Russian oil producers (Rosneft and Lukoil) add uncertainty to supply.
The summit in Abu Dhabi coincided with the annual Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC).
