Haryana’s Dalit Shift Brings Balmiki Pride Into Hindu Identity

Haryana’s Dalit Shift Brings Balmiki Pride Into Hindu Identity

A political change is taking place among some Dalit communities in Haryana.

Balmiki people are showing pride in their community while also using Hindu slogans and symbols.

The BJP is trying to win support from Balmikis and other non-dominant Dalit groups.

It has done this through both cultural outreach and changes to job and education quotas.

Haryana divided its Scheduled Caste quota into two groups after a Supreme Court ruling allowed such sub-classification.

Many Jatavs still leaned more toward Congress in the 2024 election.

The BJP says different Hindu communities should come together and avoid caste discrimination.

Some people instead favor stronger, independent Dalit politics.

It is not yet clear whether this approach will unite Dalits or create more divisions.
