India Allows Duty-Free Sugar Imports as Prices Surge

India Allows Duty-Free Sugar Imports as Prices Surge

India has allowed sugar mills to bring in up to 1 million tonnes of sugar without paying import taxes.

The decision comes before festivals, when people usually buy more sweets and other sugary foods.

Sugar prices have risen sharply, especially in Kolhapur.

The sugar industry says India does not actually have a shortage of sugar.

It says speculation and panic buying helped push prices higher.

New sugar supplies may arrive earlier than usual when the next crushing season begins.

Some refineries may also send stored sugar to the local market.

The government hopes the extra supply will prevent prices from rising further and help them become steadier.
