Three people wanted to buy it, but only two continued bidding at the end.
The price rose by Rs 1 crore each time until one bidder stopped at Rs 18 crore.
This sale happened only five days after another Shyam painting set his earlier record.
An untitled 1999 acrylic painting by Jangarh Singh Shyam sold for Rs 18 crore at Mumbai’s Pundole Gallery on 24 September.
The 91-by-69-inch work depicts a spiritual figure surrounded by snakes and birds in a tree.
Three bidders competed initially, with two remaining in a final contest that raised the price by Rs 1 crore per bid.
The painting had been estimated at Rs 4-6 crore and had never previously appeared at auction.
The sale broke Shyam’s previous record of Rs 2.88 crore, set five days earlier by Bel Mukhota (Gond).
