Bleeding Gums May Signal Hidden Gum Disease, Even Without Pain

Bleeding Gums May Signal Hidden Gum Disease, Even Without Pain

Healthy gums usually do not bleed when you brush or clean them.

Bleeding often means that germs and plaque have irritated the gums.

This early problem is called gingivitis and can often be managed with cleaning and better home care.

If it continues, it may become periodontitis, which can harm the bone holding teeth in place.

This can happen even when a person has little or no pain.

Stopping brushing can make the problem worse because more plaque can build up.

Gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush and cleaning between teeth are important.

Ongoing bleeding, bad breath, swollen gums or loose teeth should be checked by a dentist.

Finding the problem early may help protect natural teeth.
