BMC Announces Demolition Drive Against 39,111 Slum Structures
Mumbai’s civic body, called the BMC, plans to remove illegal additions from many slum structures.
The action will take place from October 1 through December 31.
Officials have identified 39,111 structures for possible action.
These structures have additions taller than 14 feet.
Residents have three months to remove the unauthorised parts themselves.
If they do not, the BMC may demolish those portions.
Most of the identified structures are in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.
The BMC says the drive will be carried out through local civic ward offices.
The BMC will intensify action against 39,111 unauthorised slum structures across Mumbai from October 1 to December 31.
The identified structures contain unauthorised additions exceeding 14 feet in height.
The eastern suburbs account for 31,227 structures, followed by 4,536 in the western suburbs and 3,348 in the island city.
The BMC has already acted against 4,584 structures and issued notices to another 611.
Residents have been asked to remove unauthorised portions voluntarily before demolition teams begin enforcement action.
