Afghanistan’s T20 Prospects Hindered by Limited Match Opportunities
Afghanistan played India in a T20 cricket match and lost by seven wickets.
It was Afghanistan’s first T20I in almost seven months.
Their players had played in different leagues, but they had not played together recently.
This may have made it harder for them to understand each other’s plans.
Afghanistan struggled early and fell to 43 runs for five wickets.
Coach Richard Pybus said the team made basic mistakes but should be given time to improve.
He also said playing more matches together would help.
Afghanistan are considered one of Asia’s strongest teams after India.
However, they have far fewer upcoming matches to prepare for future tournaments.
Afghanistan lost the first match of a three-game T20I series against India by seven wickets.
The defeat was Afghanistan’s first T20I since the 2026 T20 World Cup, following a nearly seven-month break.
Richard Pybus said limited opportunities to play together affected Afghanistan’s cohesion and execution.
Afghanistan have won 52.57% of their T20Is since 2024, second only to India among Asian teams.
Afghanistan are scheduled for only nine T20Is before the 2027 Asia Cup, compared with at least 14 for India in the same period.
