Idukki Soil Excavation Probe Ordered Amid Rain-Linked Landslide Concerns

Idukki Soil Excavation Probe Ordered Amid Rain-Linked Landslide Concerns

Heavy rain caused a mudslide near Vattavada in Idukki.

Balakrishnan and his sister Chinnu died when the mudslide destroyed the shed where they were sheltering.

Balakrishnan’s wife, Mariamma, was hurt and is in hospital.

Minister Anoop Jacob visited her and met district officials.

He said officials will investigate whether soil excavation for National Highway work helped cause landslides near Munnar.

The minister said water may have built up and suddenly flowed downhill, although he said the incident should not yet be called a landslide.

More rain was expected, and an orange alert was issued.

Jacob asked tourists and other people to temporarily avoid travelling to Idukki.
