WB Opposition Leader Criticizes Mamata Over 1993 Firing Report
Ritabrata Banerjee, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government for suppressing the Justice Chatterjee Commission report on the 1993 police firing that killed 13 Youth Congress activists.
The report, which was submitted in 2014, was only made public in 2023 by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Banerjee accused the previous TMC government of exploiting the tragedy for political gains and not providing the recommended compensation to the victims' families.
The commission had recommended Rs 25 lakh for the families of the martyrs and Rs 5 lakh for the injured, but only Rs 2 lakh and Rs 15,000 were given respectively.
The criticism was made during a parallel Martyrs’ Day platform in Kolkata, attended by several rebel TMC leaders and family members of the victims.
