Yayoi Kusama, Polka-Dot Art Pioneer, Dies at 97

Yayoi Kusama was a Japanese artist famous for polka dots, pumpkins, nets and rooms filled with mirrors and lights.

She said she began seeing unusual patterns and visions when she was a child.

She used those experiences to make art about infinity and becoming part of the world around her.

Kusama moved to New York as a young woman and joined its experimental art scene.

She made paintings, sculptures and public performances, some of which involved nudity and drew police attention.

After returning to Japan, she lived voluntarily in a psychiatric hospital while continuing to make art at a nearby studio.

Her exhibitions later became very popular with people around the world.

Her designs also appeared on merchandise and in a collaboration with Louis Vuitton.

Kusama died at 97; Kyodo News reported multiple organ failure as the cause, while another report said her official announcement did not provide a cause.
