Lula Warns of Fascism as Brazil Faces Crucial Election
Brazil was preparing to vote in an important election.
President Lula said he was running for another term to stop far-right leaders from returning to power.
He described the choice as one between him and “barbarism.”
Before the vote, he led a march through downtown Rio de Janeiro.
The march began and ended at places known for earlier protests supporting democracy.
Lula said the election was about democracy, not just one person winning.
Polls mentioned in the article showed him only slightly ahead of his rival, Flávio Bolsonaro.
Flávio’s father, Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a prison sentence for plotting a failed coup, according to the article.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said he was the only person able to prevent the far right from returning to power.
