Trump’s ‘We Don’t Need Canada’ Claim Meets Deep US Reliance

The United States and Canada trade many important products with each other.

Canada sends the United States about 4 million barrels of oil every day.

It also supplies aluminum, fertilizer called potash, electricity and car parts.

These products help American cars, farms, factories and airplanes operate.

Donald Trump says the United States does not need Canada, but he has also said America badly needs Canadian aluminum.

The United States has placed large taxes, called tariffs, on some Canadian goods.

Some Canadian leaders say Canada could restrict exports if the trade fight becomes worse.

Other Canadian leaders oppose that idea because it could hurt Canadian workers and businesses too.

The dispute shows that the two neighboring economies depend heavily on each other.
