TMC MP invokes RS rule to protect members' rights
A member of parliament from the Trinamool Congress party named Derek O’Brien spoke up in the Rajya Sabha, which is like the upper house of India's parliament.
He said that he and other members of the opposition were not being given a chance to speak about important issues.
He mentioned a rule called Rule 258, which gives members the right to raise points of order.
He said that sometimes they have to stand for a long time to be heard.
The chairman of the house said that only one person should speak at a time.
The minister agreed with O’Brien but also said that when many people shout at once, it's hard to give everyone a chance to speak.
Next week, the house will discuss the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and some other important matters.
TMC MP Derek O’Brien invoked Rule 258 to protect members' right to raise point of order.
O’Brien alleged that Opposition members were repeatedly denied the opportunity to raise points of order.
Chairman C P Radhakrishnan said only one member should speak at a time for the Chair to allow.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs L Murugan acknowledged O’Brien’s concerns and said the discussion on electoral reforms will follow the discussion in the Lok Sabha.
