Olive Ridley Turtles Return to Rushikulya for Nesting
Imagine a special place where sea turtles come to lay their eggs.
This place is called Rushikulya.
Scientists have found that many Olive Ridley turtles, a type of sea turtle, are coming back to this spot to nest because people are helping to keep them safe.
Over 500 turtles that were tagged have returned.
Many more turtles visited this year to lay their eggs.
People are working hard to protect these turtles and their eggs.
They also want to build a research center to help the turtles even more.
Rushikulya river mouth is a major rookery for Olive Ridley turtles.
553 tagged turtles returned to the rookery for nesting in the last three years.
Around 12,000 female turtles were tagged between 2021-2023.
Approximately 9 lakh Olive Ridley turtles visited for mass nesting this year.
Local community is actively involved in protecting the turtles.
