India Considers Easing Rare Earth Import Rules for Electric Trucks, Buses
India is thinking about making it easier for companies that make electric trucks and buses to get the parts they need.
Right now, these companies must buy parts made in India, but getting certain parts like rare earth magnets is tough.
These magnets are crucial for the motors that power the vehicles.
The government might temporarily let these companies import these magnets from China, where they're made.
This is because of a recent improvement in relations between India and China.
The goal is to help these companies build more electric trucks and buses and encourage them to develop more domestic capabilities.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries is considering relaxing localization rules for electric truck and bus makers.
This is due to a supply crunch of rare earth magnets used in traction motors.
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) suggested the relaxation.
The policy tweak will be temporary, pending resumption of rare earth magnet exports from China.
The PM E-Drive scheme, with funds allocated for electric trucks and buses, is extended through March 2028.
