India's trade gap hits five-month high; government says no worries

India buys and sells things with other countries.

When India buys more from other countries than it sells to them, that is called a trade deficit.

In June 2026, India's trade deficit grew to $30.4 billion.

That was the highest number seen in five months.

In the year before that, the deficit averaged about $29.3 billion each month.

So June's number was a little higher than usual.

The Commerce and Industry Ministry, a government office in charge of trade, shared these numbers with Parliament.

Parliament is where India's leaders meet to discuss and make rules.

The government says people should not worry too much.

It believes the trade gap is nothing to be alarmed about.
