Supreme Court Closes Citizenship Deportation Case After Returns

Supreme Court Closes Citizenship Deportation Case After Returns

Some Bengali-speaking people were sent from India to Bangladesh because officials questioned whether they were Indian citizens.

Their lawyers said the deportations were wrong.

The Centre later agreed to bring some of them back to India as a special case.

It said their citizenship claims would be checked after they returned.

A lawyer told the Supreme Court that all the affected people had come back.

The Supreme Court said there was no need to continue this particular case.

However, it did not decide the larger legal question about similar deportations.

The affected people had reportedly been arrested by Bangladesh police after being sent there.
