India Seeks Permanent UN Security Council Seat After Eight Terms

India has been elected to the United Nations Security Council eight times, but each membership lasted only two years.

It wants a permanent seat because it says the Council does not represent today’s world fairly.

Five countries currently hold permanent seats and can veto important decisions.

India says its large population, democracy, economy and peacekeeping record support its claim.

It has sent nearly 300,000 personnel to United Nations peacekeeping missions, according to figures cited in the article.

India formally announced its permanent-membership bid in 1994.

Many countries have supported India, although China’s position has been more cautious.

Countries have discussed reform for decades without agreeing on how to change the Council.

India is now seeking another temporary seat for 2028–29 while continuing its larger campaign for permanent membership.
