India Mandates Sound Alerts for Electric Vehicles
India is implementing a new rule to make electric vehicles (EVs) make noise.
Starting October 2026, all new electric cars, buses, and trucks must have a sound system called AVAS.
By October 2027, all existing models of these vehicles will also need it.
This is to help people, especially pedestrians and cyclists, hear EVs coming.
The goal is to reduce accidents since EVs are often very quiet.
Two-wheelers and three-wheelers are currently excluded from this rule.
The sound will activate when the EV travels under 20 kmph.
The Indian government mandates AVAS for electric vehicles.
The mandate applies to passenger vehicles, buses, and trucks (categories M and N).
New EV models must have AVAS starting October 1, 2026.
Existing EV models must comply by October 1, 2027.
The AVAS system must comply with AIS-173 standards.
