Assam MLA questions delay in ST status for six communities

Assam MLA questions delay in ST status for six communities

In Assam, India, some communities have been asking for a long time to be recognized as Scheduled Tribes (STs), which gives them special benefits for education and jobs.

A lawmaker from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) recently asked why the government is taking so long to grant this status.

The government said it's not entirely up to them; they need approval from the central government and Parliament.

They have already sent proposals and even reserved some seats in medical colleges for these communities.

The government also suggested a new way to classify STs so that the existing tribes aren't affected.

The final decision will be made by Parliament.
