Rakhi Initiative Brings Brick-Kiln Children Closer to Education
Many families travel to Hooghly to work at brick kilns for part of the year.
Their children often have little access to food, clothing or school lessons.
A college group has been teaching some of these children.
During Raksha Bandhan, 20 volunteers visited them at their school.
They tied colorful Rakhis on the children’s wrists.
They also shared sweets and spent time together.
The volunteers wanted the children to feel included and cared for.
They hope the children can gradually join regular education and society.
Twenty National Service Scheme volunteers celebrated Raksha Bandhan with migrant workers’ children in Balagarh, Hooghly.
The children attend lessons through an educational initiative at Biplabi Bhupati Majumdar Pathshala.
Many brick-kiln workers migrate seasonally from Bihar, Odisha and other states to Hooghly district.
Volunteers tied Rakhis, shared sweets and spent time building a sense of belonging with the children.
