Chinese Firms Rapidly Rewire Global Supply Chains Through Overseas Investment

Chinese companies are building many factories in other countries.

They have spent more than $200 billion doing this in the past three years.

Their factories are spreading across almost the whole world.

The companies are also bringing their usual suppliers with them.

This creates groups of connected factories in new places.

Much of the investment involves electric vehicles, clean energy and data-centre equipment.

Chinese firms are expanding partly because demand in China is weak and competition there is strong.

US tariffs are also encouraging some manufacturers to move production abroad.

Egypt’s Ain Sokhna industrial zone is one example of this growth.

These changes are reshaping where products are made around the world.
