Mangaluru Railway Transfer Deepens Kerala-Karnataka Division Confrontation

Mangaluru Railway Transfer Deepens Kerala-Karnataka Division Confrontation

The Railway Board decided to move the Mangaluru railway area from a division based in Kerala to one based in Karnataka.

This change is scheduled to begin on October 1.

Kerala’s leaders are angry because they say the Palakkad division could lose much of its income and development strength.

They also say Kerala’s government and MPs were not consulted.

Some Kerala MPs plan to protest and want the decision paused.

Karnataka leaders support the change because they say the railway system in the region should be managed together.

Coastal Karnataka has long complained that its railway lines were split among different railway organizations.

A Kerala BJP leader says the dispute is political and that passengers will not be affected.
