Unification Church Head's Bribery Trial Begins in South Korea
A very important trial started in South Korea.
The leader of a religious group called the Unification Church, whose new name is the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, is accused of giving expensive gifts and money to important people to get favors.
The leader, an 82-year-old woman named Han Hak-ja, says she is innocent and that someone else in her group did these things without her knowledge.
The gifts included fancy handbags, a diamond necklace, and even some special ginseng.
The trial is happening because of investigations into the former president and his wife.
The church has been having problems lately, with some people calling it a dangerous cult and a court in Japan even ordering its Japanese branch to stop operating.
Han Hak-ja, leader of the Unification Church, is on trial for allegedly bribing former First Lady Kim Keon Hee with luxury items and cash.
Kim admitted receiving the gifts but denied any quid pro quo.
Han is also accused of bribing a close confidante of former president Yoon and helping Yoon win the 2022 election.
Prosecutors claim Han misappropriated church donations for illegal activities, while her lawyers argue she was unaware of the actions.
The church has faced recent controversies, including a Tokyo court order to disband its Japanese branch.
