EMI Bounces May Trigger Penalties and Credit Score Damage

EMI Bounces May Trigger Penalties and Credit Score Damage

An EMI is a regular payment for a loan.

Sometimes the bank cannot collect it automatically.

This can happen because there is not enough money, the payment permission is incorrect, or there is a technical problem.

The lender may charge a bounce fee.

Under the Reserve Bank of India’s 2023 rules, the lender should tell the borrower about a short grace period, usually about seven days, before reporting the missed payment.

The article says this help is generally for a first missed payment.

Paying during that period may help prevent the missed payment from being reported.

If it is reported, a credit score may fall by about 30 to 100 points.

Repeated missed payments can lead to more charges, collection efforts, or legal action.
