Car Bomb Attack: Delhi Faces New Terror Threat
Imagine a bomb hidden inside a regular car.
This is called a car bomb, or VBIED.
Terrorists like these because it's easier to hide and can cause a lot of damage.
The car looks normal, like any other car on the street, making it hard for police to spot.
The car itself is part of the bomb, and when it explodes, pieces of the car fly out like dangerous bullets.
Recently, a car bomb exploded near the Red Fort in Delhi, sadly causing many deaths.
Police are trying to figure out how to find these hidden bombs before they explode.
They are looking for unusual cars, like ones parked for too long or with odd smells, and asking people to be watchful.
Even though police are familiar with car bombs, stopping them, especially in busy cities, is very tricky.
Delhi experienced a new terror tactic with a car bomb (VBIED) attack near the Red Fort, resulting in 13 fatalities.
VBIEDs are considered highly dangerous due to their destructive potential, ease of preparation, and inconspicuous nature.
The vehicle used in the Delhi attack was a Hyundai i20, filled with Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil, and had traveled from Faridabad.
India has prior experience with VBIED attacks, including significant incidents in Pulwama and Coimbatore.
Challenges in stopping VBIEDs include difficulty in real-time detection, vehicles blending into traffic, and potential concealment of explosives within the car's structure.

Effectiveness of VBIEDs
Challenges in Stopping VBIEDs
Ease of Preparation and Impact
Effectiveness of VBIEDs
VBIEDs are relatively easy to prepare with a lower volume of explosives, using the vehicle itself as a weapon, and causing mass casualties and destruction due to lethal shrapnel.
Challenges in Stopping VBIEDs
Identifying and stopping VBIEDs is difficult, especially in urban areas with high traffic, as vehicles are often inconspicuous and can be made to appear ordinary.
Investigation and Detection
Effectiveness of VBIEDs
The frequent sale and re-sale of common vehicles create a paper trail that can throw off investigations.
Challenges in Stopping VBIEDs
Detecting VBIEDs can be challenging even with security measures like CCTV, checkpoints, and scanners, especially if the explosive is hidden in hollowed-out parts of the car. Real-time identification in high-traffic areas is also difficult.
Suicide Bomber Scenario
Effectiveness of VBIEDs
Suicide-bomber VBIEDs, like the one in Delhi, make deterrence or negotiation almost impossible.
Challenges in Stopping VBIEDs
While police can evacuate areas to minimize casualties, they still have to deal with the presence of the bomb itself.
