RBI: Headline Inflation Rises, Core Inflation Subdued
In June 2026, India's overall inflation rate, called headline inflation, went up.
This includes prices of all goods and services people buy, like food, fuel, and clothes.
However, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says that if we remove the prices of food and fuel, which can change a lot due to things like bad weather or global events, the underlying inflation rate, called core inflation, is still low.
This means that the recent increase in inflation is mostly due to temporary factors like higher fuel prices and a weak monsoon, rather than people spending more money.
The RBI looks at both headline and core inflation to decide on interest rates and other policies to keep the economy stable.
Headline inflation in India rose in June 2026 due to higher fuel and food prices.
Core inflation, which excludes food and fuel, remained subdued, indicating contained underlying price pressures.
The RBI monitors both headline and core inflation to guide monetary policy decisions.
Supply-side factors like a weak monsoon and geopolitical tensions drove the recent inflation spike.
The RBI's repo rate was kept at 5.25% in June, with a revised FY27 inflation forecast of 5.1%.
