Court Criticizes Delhi for Used Car Market Regulation Failures
The Delhi High Court scolded the Delhi government for not properly controlling the sale of used cars, saying it could be dangerous.
They mentioned a recent bomb attack using an old car that was sold many times but still had the original owner's name.
The court wants the government to fix this issue.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court changed its rules to allow action against very old, polluting cars in Delhi, but only if they have old engines (BS-III or older).
They said newer cars (BS-IV and above) are okay to use.
This is because old cars cause a lot of pollution, and Delhi has bad air quality problems.
Delhi High Court criticized the Delhi government for failing to regulate the used car market, citing public safety risks.
The court referred to the Red Fort bomb blast, which used an old, multi-sold car still registered to the original owner.
The court directed the Delhi government to file a detailed response and set the next hearing for January 2026.
The Supreme Court modified its order to allow action against end-of-life vehicles with BS-III or older engines in Delhi-NCR.
The Supreme Court exempted BS-IV and newer vehicles from action, regardless of age, to address air pollution concerns.
