Manipur Civil Bodies Clash Over Buffer Zones
In Manipur, India, there's a big argument between two groups of people, the Meitei and the Kuki.
They can't agree on something called 'buffer zones,' which are areas between their communities.
Some people say these zones are necessary to keep the peace, while others say they're unfair and against the law.
A politician named A Bimol Akoijam visited a village and said the zones are illegal.
But another group, the Kuki Human Rights Council, said the zones should be respected.
Another group, People's Alliance for Peace and Progress, said the zones don't exist and are just made up to cause trouble.
There's also a problem with people not being able to move freely, especially on highways.
Both sides are blaming each other for the problems.
Over 260 people have been killed and nearly 50,000 have been forced to leave their homes since the fighting started in May 2023.
Civil society organizations in Manipur are in dispute over the concept of 'buffer zones' between Meitei and Kuki settlements.
Manipur Congress MP A Bimol Akoijam called the buffer zones 'illegal' and questioned their constitutional basis.
The Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC) defended the buffer zones, calling them necessary boundaries.
The People's Alliance for Peace and Progress, Manipur (PAPPM) rejected the idea of buffer zones, calling them 'divisive and unconstitutional'.
Meitei and Kuki communities are also in conflict over free movement, with allegations of blockades and restrictions on highways.
