France heatwave records over 20,000 deaths
France has experienced a very hot period called a heatwave, which has led to many more deaths than usual.
During this time, there were about 21,674 deaths, which is 5,764 more than expected.
Most of these extra deaths happened to people who are 75 years old or older.
The Paris area was hit the hardest, with nearly 2,000 more deaths than usual.
Scientists say that climate change is making these heatwaves worse, and they can make existing health problems more serious, especially for older people.
This is a big problem because heatwaves can cause many deaths without being as visible as other disasters like floods or storms.
France recorded 5,764 more deaths than expected between June 17 and July 2 due to a heatwave.
Total deaths during this period were 21,674, a 36% increase from the seasonal average.
People aged 75 and above accounted for nearly two-thirds of the additional deaths.
The Paris region saw the largest impact with nearly 2,000 additional deaths.
Scientists warn that climate change is contributing to more intense and longer heatwaves in Europe.
