Somali Pirate Attacks Surge as Ships Shift Toward Red Sea

Pirate attacks on ships near Somalia have increased in 2026.

Many ships are taking longer routes because fighting and attacks have disrupted important sea lanes.

This means more ships are traveling through waters where Somali pirates may operate.

Two ships were hijacked in August, carrying a total of 22 Indian sailors.

One ship was taken near Somalia, and the other was seized near Yemen.

The Indian Navy has stopped or responded to several pirate attacks.

Officials are also watching the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea because attacks have happened close to Yemen.

They are concerned that pirates may be using areas where governments have less control.

The Maritime Security Centre for the Horn of Africa has expanded the waters included in its threat assessment.
