French Senate Approves 2026 Budget Bill
The French Senate has approved a budget plan for the year 2026.
The government wants to keep the budget deficit below 5% of the country's economic output.
However, the Senate's version of the budget has a slightly higher deficit of 5.3%.
Now, a group of lawmakers from both the Senate and the lower house will meet to discuss and agree on a final version of the budget.
If they can't agree, the government might have to use temporary measures to keep things running.
The government needs support from different political groups to pass the budget, especially after losing its majority in the last election.
French Senate approved the 2026 budget bill with a 187 to 109 vote.
The Senate's version of the budget has a deficit of 5.3%, higher than the government's target of 5%.
A joint committee of lawmakers will meet to negotiate a compromise budget.
The final vote on the budget is scheduled for December 23.
The government may need to submit emergency legislation if no agreement is reached.
