SPCSS-TN opposes Madras University corpus fund use
The State Platform for Common School System — Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) is worried about the University of Madras using its special savings, called the corpus fund, to pay retired employees.
The university has about Rs 300 crore in this fund, and they might take out Rs 95.44 crore to pay the retired staff.
SPCSS-TN says this is not right because the government promised to give money for this instead.
They think using the fund would break the rules and go against what the court said.
SPCSS-TN wants the government to give the university enough money to pay the retired employees and to talk about the money problems of all state universities in a special meeting.
SPCSS-TN urges the Tamil Nadu government to prevent the University of Madras from using its corpus fund to pay retired employees' terminal benefits.
The University of Madras Syndicate is considering withdrawing Rs 95.44 crore from its corpus fund of Rs 300 crore to pay dues to retired staff.
SPCSS-TN argues that using the corpus fund would breach trust and violate a Madras High Court order, which assured budgetary support from the government.
The organization contends that any further use of the corpus fund for recurring expenses like salaries and pensions would amount to a criminal breach of trust and wilful disobedience of the High Court’s order.
SPCSS-TN calls for a special session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to discuss the financial crises faced by state universities and to request adequate budgetary allocation and full grants.
