Russia Says Plague Reports Are Unconfirmed, Situation Under Control

News reports said a laboratory worker in Siberia had died from plague.

Some reports suggested an accident at her workplace might have exposed her to the disease.

Regional officials said an expert review instead identified pneumonia of an unknown cause.

Russia’s health watchdog said tests did not find disease-causing microorganisms connected to her work in her samples.

Officials also said no other institute workers had sought medical care since her death.

The regional governor said the situation was stable and under control.

The Kremlin said people should rely on official health agency statements rather than rumors.

Plague can take different forms, and the World Health Organization says pneumonic plague can be deadly without early treatment.
