Senior Citizens Demand Policy Changes Ahead of Mumbai Polls
A group of senior citizens' organizations in Mumbai has made a list of demands before the city's upcoming elections.
They want the city to make special places and rules to help older people.
The group says there are a lot of older people in Mumbai, and they want the city to be more friendly to them.
They want things like special centers for seniors, free medical treatment, and cheaper public transport.
They also want the city to follow old promises it made to help seniors.
The group says if their demands are not met, many older people might vote for 'None of the Above' (NOTA) in the elections.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of senior citizens’ organisations in Mumbai has presented a charter of demands ahead of the municipal elections.
The JAC represents over 1.5 crore seniors across the state, including 15 lakh in Mumbai, and warns of a NOTA surge if demands are ignored.
Key demands include a dedicated administrative mechanism, 10% budget reservation for seniors, and the construction of three senior citizen centers.
The charter also calls for free medical treatment, 10% bed reservation for geriatric patients, and concessions in public transport.
The JAC criticizes the inconsistent implementation of the 2013 Senior Citizens Policy and urges political parties to incorporate their demands into election manifestos.
