Health Insurance Zone Rules Can Trigger Metro Hospital Co-Pays

Health Insurance Zone Rules Can Trigger Metro Hospital Co-Pays

Some health insurance plans divide cities into different cost zones.

A plan may let you get treatment anywhere in the country, but it can make you pay extra when you use a hospital in a more expensive zone.

This extra payment is called a zone-based co-pay.

For example, with a 20% co-pay on a Rs 15 lakh bill, you would pay Rs 3 lakh and the insurer would pay the rest.

This is different from a voluntary co-pay, which you choose to lower your premium.

People who often use hospitals in metro cities may want to pay for the higher zone in advance.

People who only visit a metro occasionally may prefer the cheaper zone-based option.

If you move to a more expensive city, you should tell your insurer.

Senior citizens may have both a standard co-pay and a zone-based co-pay, depending on the policy rules.
