IEA Warns of Debt Impact on India's Auto Fuel Demand
India is buying a lot more gasoline and jet fuel, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) says this is a big part of why the world is using more oil.
The growth is because more people in India are getting richer and buying things like cars and taking flights.
But the IEA worries that a lot of this spending is being done with borrowed money, meaning people are taking on debt.
If people can't pay back their loans, they might stop buying so much fuel, and the growth could slow down.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also says that while people are borrowing more, it's because more people are borrowing, not that the amounts borrowed by individuals are getting much bigger.
IEA warns that rising household debt in India may impact auto fuel consumption.
India is expected to lead global oil demand growth, increasing by 1 million barrels per day between 2024-2030.
Petrol and jet fuel consumption are driving the growth, fueled by a rising middle class and aspirational spending.
Household debt in India has risen to 43% of GDP in 2024, up from 35% in 2022.
RBI notes that the increase in household debt is driven by more borrowers, not necessarily higher individual debt levels.
