MIT Study Links ChatGPT Essay Use to Cognitive Debt

Researchers at the MIT Media Lab studied how people write essays with and without AI help.

About 54 people used ChatGPT, Google Search, or only their own thoughts.

Their brain activity was measured while they worked.

People who wrote without AI showed more brain connections during the tasks.

People using ChatGPT were less likely to remember or quote what they had written.

The researchers called the possible cost of repeatedly letting AI do the thinking “cognitive debt.”

This does not mean ChatGPT has been proven to damage brains.

The study was small, preliminary, and had not yet received full peer review.

The researchers suggested trying to think and make a first argument before asking AI for help.
