Deadly Chilean Storm Severs Key Highway, Floods Arid Regions
A very strong storm hit the normally dry north-central parts of Chile, causing lots of rain, mudslides, and flooding.
This has blocked important roads, cut off villages, and damaged electricity, water, and phone services.
At least 10 people have died, and the damage is expected to cost a lot of money to fix.
The government has declared a state of emergency to help people and repair the damage.
The storm has also affected farming and mining in the area.
The storm is part of a weather pattern called El Niño, which can cause flooding and drought in different parts of the world.
Prolonged winter rains in Chile's north-central regions caused flooding, mudslides, and blocked parts of the main highway, killing at least 10 people.
Tens of thousands remain cut off in isolated villages in the Coquimbo and Atacama regions.
The storm disrupted electricity, water supplies, and telecommunications, with damage likely to run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
President José Antonio Kast declared a state of catastrophe in the Coquimbo region and Huasco province, granting emergency powers to respond to widespread flooding and damage.
The storm has caused localized disruptions to mining operations and potential disruptions to citrus and avocado harvests.
