Delhi's Severe Pollution Demands Urgent Action
Delhi, the capital of India, has very bad air pollution.
It's so bad that in most other cities, people would be very worried.
But in Delhi, things are still going on as usual.
Sunita Narain, who works at the Centre for Science and Environment, says the government needs to do something big to fix this problem.
She suggests using cleaner fuel, more buses and trains, and stopping old, polluting cars from driving in the city.
She also says that even though fuel is cleaner now, there are too many private cars, which makes the problem worse.
She is sad that the government is not doing enough to help.
The government is ready to debate the pollution crisis in Parliament, and the opposition wants a detailed discussion to find solutions.
An expert committee has been set up to tackle vehicular pollution and suggest ways to improve air quality.
The committee includes experts from various fields and is expected to submit its recommendations within two months.
Additionally, about 40 start-up founders and business representatives met to discuss problem-focused solutions to tackle Delhi's air pollution.
They discussed various approaches and challenges in expanding these interventions, such as carpooling, decentralised utilisation of rice straw, and supporting start-up ventures.
The meeting was organized by The Bharat Project and focused on building capacity over the next 11 months to better prepare the city for air pollution next year.
Delhi's pollution levels are critically high, requiring urgent action.
Sunita Narain suggests shifting industries to clean fuel and promoting public transport.
Old, polluting vehicles should be banned from Delhi's streets.
While fuel has become cleaner, the increase in private vehicles negates progress.
