India-US Trade Deal Progress Amid Tariff Issues
India and the United States are talking about making a big trade deal.
The US has put high taxes (tariffs) on Indian goods, which makes it harder for India to sell things to the US.
India wants these taxes to be lowered or removed.
The Commerce Secretary of India, Rajesh Agrawal, said they hope to finish a part of the deal by the end of the year.
However, there are some tricky issues to solve, like the US wanting to sell more farm products to India.
Both countries are working hard to make a deal that is fair for everyone.
The full trade agreement will take more time to finish.
India hopes to finalize a framework trade deal with the US by the end of 2025, but political decisions are needed on sticking issues.
US tariffs of 50% on Indian goods, including a 25% penalty for purchasing Russian oil, are a major point of contention.
Key sticking points include US demands for market access to agriculture and dairy items and India's reluctance to allow GM soybean and corn imports.
A full-fledged Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) is expected to follow the framework deal and will take more time to finalize.
Parallel negotiations are ongoing for both the framework deal and the broader BTA, with weekly virtual meetings between the teams.
