Contractor’s Suicide Highlights Maharashtra’s Pending Government Payment Crisis

A contractor named Gajubhau Devkate was waiting for the government to pay him for work he had completed.

The amount owed was said to be about Rs 2 crore.

He allegedly died by suicide at his home in Navi Mumbai on August 25.

The contractors’ association says he had repeatedly asked an engineer to release the money.

It says the unpaid bills caused him serious financial and mental stress.

The association blamed Public Works Department officials for not clearing the payments.

It wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about the case.

The association wants legal action against those it believes were responsible.
