Sachithra Senanayake Charged with Match-Fixing Under New Law
Imagine a cricket player, Sachithra Senanayake, who used to play for Sri Lanka's national team.
He's been accused of trying to cheat in some cricket games.
He allegedly tried to get other players to throw matches, which means making them play badly on purpose.
This happened during a cricket tournament in Sri Lanka back in 2020.
Now, he's been charged under a new law in Sri Lanka that fights against cheating in sports.
If he's found guilty, he could go to jail for up to 10 years and pay a big fine.
This new law was created because there were worries about too much cheating in Sri Lankan cricket, which even the International Cricket Council noticed.
The case is now going to court.
Sachithra Senanayake, a former Sri Lanka off-spinner, has been charged with match-fixing.
The charges relate to alleged attempts to corrupt matches in the 2020 Lanka Premier League.
The case is the first under Sri Lanka's anti-sports corruption law.
Senanayake played 74 matches for the national side between 2012 and 2016.
If convicted, Senanayake could face up to 10 years in prison and a large fine.
