Supreme Court Orders Seven States to Raise Judicial Retirement Age

Supreme Court Orders Seven States to Raise Judicial Retirement Age

The Supreme Court wants some states to let judges in lower courts work until they are 62 instead of 60.

It said this will help keep experienced judges in the courts.

The change applies immediately in seven states while their rules are being updated.

High Courts must check whether each judge is suitable and has performed well.

Judges who retired on or after March 31 may be allowed to return if they have not taken another job.

Other states and Union Territories were asked to think again about the same change.

The court said empty judge positions can make it harder for people to get justice.

It also said unsuitable officials should not continue just because the retirement age was raised.
