Luxembourg Backs India’s Permanent Seat, Urges UN Veto Reform

Luxembourg’s foreign minister said India should have a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

He said India is too important and large to remain outside the permanent group.

He also mentioned Brazil as a country that should receive consideration.

The Security Council has five permanent members with veto power, according to the report’s discussion of the system.

A veto lets one country stop a decision supported by other countries.

Xavier Bettel called this system an old leftover from the Second World War.

He suggested that two-thirds of the Council should be able to overrule a veto.

India says the Council should better represent today’s world and developing countries.
