China, Nepal Link Glacier Collapse to Deadly Border Floods

China, Nepal Link Glacier Collapse to Deadly Border Floods

A glacier in Nepal broke apart and sent ice, rocks, mud and water into nearby rivers.

The rushing material caused severe floods near the Nepal-China border.

Chinese and Nepalese officials said the glacier collapse caused the disaster, although early reports considered other possibilities.

Scientists think the falling ice and rocks briefly blocked a river before the blockage broke open.

Hundreds of people died, and many others were still missing.

A tourist accidentally recorded part of the collapse, and a Chinese expert said the location matched satellite images.

China evacuated more than 1,000 people from the affected area.

Nepal paused some searches because rain and fog made the work dangerous.
