Meghalaya HC Orders Police Accountability Commission Setup
Imagine the police have to follow rules, but sometimes, they might not.
To make sure things are fair, the Meghalaya High Court has told the government to create a special group called the Police Accountability Commission.
This group will check if the police are doing their jobs correctly and investigate if there are any problems.
The law for this was made 15 years ago, but the group wasn't created until the court stepped in.
The commission will have people with experience in law and the police, and it's designed to make sure the police are accountable to the people.
They'll also make sure any issues are looked at fairly and quickly.
Meghalaya High Court ordered the state government to establish a Police Accountability Commission within four months.
The court's directive followed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding the commission's delayed formation.
The commission is mandated by the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010, but hadn't been set up despite the law being enacted 15 years ago.
The commission will include a retired principal secretary-level officer, a retired police officer, and a person with experience in law or public administration.
The commission is designed to ensure police accountability, investigate misconduct allegations, and provide guidance to the police department.
