Mumbai Police Increases Women Drivers from One to 350
Once upon a time, only one woman drove a police car in Mumbai.
But things changed!
Around ten years ago, a brave policewoman named Jyotsna Dangat started driving police vehicles.
Other women were inspired and learned to drive.
Mumbai police needed more drivers, and now about 350 women are driving police cars all over the city!
They help with important jobs, like helping women and children who need help.
It's a great example of how women are stepping up in every field, doing what was previously considered men's work!
Mumbai Police now has approximately 350 women drivers, a significant increase from a single driver a decade ago.
The initiative began around 2015 when Constable Jyotsna Dangat became the first woman to drive a police vehicle.
The program addressed a shortage of skilled drivers within the Mumbai Police force.
Women drivers now operate various police vehicles, including those assigned to the 'Nirbhaya' Squad.
Recruitment for driver positions, including women, was approved in 2019 after being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
